What is a Waterproof Junction Box?

A waterproof junction box is a protective enclosure designed to house electrical connections and cables while providing IP-rated protection against dust and water ingress.

These specialized enclosures are primarily used for connecting, extending, or modifying electrical circuits, particularly in situations involving 12V power systems or other electrical installations where standard connections would be vulnerable to environmental damage.

The main purpose of waterproof junction boxes is to protect electrical connections from environmental hazards. When cables are cut and reconnected for extension or modification purposes, the resulting connections are typically not waterproof on their own. By housing these connections within an IP-rated junction box, the electrical components are shielded from water, dust, spray, moisture, and other potentially damaging elements that could compromise system reliability.

What is cable gland?

A cable gland, also known as a cord grip, cable connector, or cable fitting, is a mechanical device used to secure and seal the end of a cable where it enters an enclosure, panel, or piece of electrical equipment. It provides strain relief, prevents damage to the cable, and seals the entry point to protect against environmental factors like dust, moisture, and chemicals.

What is sealing ring?

A sealing ring for a junction box is a component, often made of rubber or silicone, that creates a watertight and airtight seal around cable entry points, preventing water, dust, and other contaminants from entering the box.

IP Rating Guide for Junction Boxes

The IP68 rating means dust-tight (that’s the “6”) and can handle being underwater up to 1 meter for 30 minutes or more (that’s the “8”). It’s tougher than IP65 (splash-proof), IP66 (strong jets), and IP67 (short submersion), and even beats IP69 for high-pressure jets. So, whether it’s rain or a deep soak, your setup stays safe.
